A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
